A slime mould - Arcyria denudata
A slime mould - Arcyria denudata
The picture shows what might be taken for tiny trooping mushrooms, but, as their subsequent development makes clear, this is a slime mould. The stalked bodies, which are not yet mature, will be the sporangia (spore-producing structures). They are not very recognisable at this stage, but they later fluff up considerably, the lilac colour giving way to a vivid red; compare NS3977 : A slime mould - Arcyria denudata, showing more mature structures.

These ones were on a log beside a NS3977 : Path through the woods, not far from a conspicuous NS3977 : Mound beside the River Leven.
