NS3878 : A coral fungus

taken 4 years ago, near to Renton, West Dunbartonshire, Great Britain

A coral fungus
A coral fungus
This fungus was growing beside NS3878 : A path through the woods. The colours were unusual; the body had, except near the tips, a conspicuous violet tint.

The fungus was not positively identified to species.

(Clavulina cinerea can look rather like this, though it typically branches less near the tips. Another possibility is C. cristata, which can exhibit colours like these when it is infected by the fungus Helminthosphaeria clavariarum; a few normal-looking white specimens of C. cristata were growing just inches away from this spot.)
