Spindletree Cave, Dover Gill
Spindletree Cave, Dover Gill
The cave is an upper entrance to SD7594 : Dover Gill Lower Cave entrance which was discovered and explored by members of the Gritstone club between 1982 and 1984. The cave extends for 376m and has four entrances and is linked hydrologically to the nearby Dover Gill Upper Cave (length 514m), also a Gritstone discovery from the same era. Remoteness from the regular caving areas of the Dales accounts for its relatively recent exploration and ensures few visitors. My own visit was some twenty years ago and the farmer at East House where we parked could not recall any other visitors. The tree which gives this entrance its name is on the right - the guidebook, 'Northern Caves 3' suggests that it may actually be a Purging Buckthorn. The left-hand tree is definitely a rowan.
