Powderham Castle, Kenton, Devon
Powderham Castle, Kenton, Devon
Powderham is not really a castle. It was originally a fortified manor house. It endured a two month siege during The Wars of the Roses and in the Civil War was garrisoned by Royalist soldiers. But it fell to the Parliamentarians in 1646 and was badly damaged in the conflict. It remained in a ruinous state until the 1700s when it was restored and rebuilt by Sir William Courtenay, and remains in the family to this day.
