The Drill Hall remembers the many men of the town who were part of the regiment and who paraded here at the outbreak of war before leaving.

The history of the company records that they were involved defending the Ypres salient in 1915, along with remnants of other divisions, in the face of overwhelming odds. On 8th May the Germans opened up with a prolonged artillery bombardment before rushing into the 1st Monmouthshire's flank. Despite losing support the men tenaciously held the trenches and the roads to the Channel ports. However, by the following day some 20 officers and 400 soldiers were no longer able to fight, being injured, captured or killed.
