Science Museum - Belliss & Morcom steam engine
This inverted vertical single cylinder enclosed engine direct driving a dynamo is important as being the prototype engine incorporating forced lubrication as developed by Pain at Belliss & Morcom in Birmingham. This allowed double acting high speed engines that were ideal for the developing electric power industry (although overtaken by turbines for larger powers). Belliss engines were made into the 1970s, the Germans are still making high speed steam engines and every modern internal combustion engine (like the one in your car (EVs excluded)) uses forced lubrication. This really is a machine that shaped the modern world and is alongside the Willans high speed engine and a Parsons turbine.
