Portrait bench by cycle route 52
Portrait bench by cycle route 52
One of Sustrans' portrait benches alongside the newly-created section of National Cycle Route 52. It commemorates three people with local connections.
From left to right they are:
John Kemp Starley, 1854-1901, known for the creation of the Rover Safety Bicycle in Coventry in 1885, a chain drive bike with similar sized wheels.
Edward Langley Fardon, 1839-1926, a whitesmith and engineer who did work for the Stoneleigh estate and is attributed with having made a contribution to the evolution in design of the early bicycle.
Helen Martin, 1907-1988, the former 'unknown benefactor' to Warwick University who, in 1963 set up a trust to support the then new university. The total contribution to date is estimated to be equivalent to 28m at today's prices.
National Cycle Route 52
Part of the Sustrans National Cycle Network initiative. When completed, National Cycle Route 52 will run northwards from Warwick via Coventry, Nuneaton and Coalville to join route 6 west of Loughborough.
