The Moderator's Office Chair Tapestries (6)
Six is the number of creation and perfection, symbolising divine power, majesty, wisdom, love, mercy and justice. It is also of course the number of days of the creation of the Earth as recounted in the Bible; the small discs illustrate the labours of the six days. The Moderator's Office Chair Tapestries
In the offices of the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland is a set of twelve oak chairs, each with a different tapestry design incorporating the numbers one to twelve, and the meanings associated with them in both Christian and other religions. The rainbow, considered after its appearance following the biblical flood to be a symbol of God's reconciliation with Man, is the other recurring theme incorporated in each of the designs. I believe that the designer was Malcolm Lochead, but I do not know who did the work. The tapestries are in the upright backs of the chairs; the seats are plain black. The chairs are rarely displayed, but I was fortunate enough to see them, and to obtain permission to photograph them for Geograph, on the Edinburgh Doors Open Day.
