Fungus on mossy log (Pholiota sp. ?)
Fungus on mossy log (Pholiota sp. ?)
I have not yet positively identified this quite handsome brown fungus, but I think it may be a Pholiota species as these occur on rotting wood such as this log. Two other large genuses that grow on rotting logs are Hypholoma and Flammulina, but both these genuses tend to grow in tufted groups with many fruiting bodies packed close together. This example is similar in appearance to some of the Tricholoma genus, but they are generally symbiotic (growing in partnership with the roots of a living tree for example) rather than saprotrophic (living on decaying matter, such as this rotting log).
Note: These fungi actually look remarkably like shiitake mushrooms (Lentinula edodes) that you can buy in the supermarket, however shiitake (as their name perhaps suggests) are not native to Britain, so we can be pretty confident that they are not them.
