Lycoperdon perlatum - The Common Puffball
Lycoperdon perlatum - The Common Puffball
Lycoperdon perlatum is the Common Puffball. Its surface is covered in little "warts" or pimples each surrounded by smaller ones. There are several species of puffball and most are edible when young with white flesh - their flavour ranging from mediocre to excellent in the case of the giant puffball. The common puffball seen here is considered "good" once the warts have been rubbed off, and providing that the flesh is still all white and firmly spongy. This example was about two inches (5cm) diameter. The inverted heart shape is not typical of the species, usually they are more spherical, it is possible therefore that this is a more unusual but closely related species.
