Advocates' Library
Advocates' Library
The Library was founded in 1689 and is widely regarded as the finest working law library in the UK. The present building dates from 1829-1833. In 1709 the Library gained legal deposit status, which means that is entitled to receive a copy of every book published in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Thus it effectively became Scotland's national library. However the pressures on space became overwhelming and in 1925 the Faculty of Advocates donated 750,000 non-legal items which became the basis of the National Library of Scotland, which now has legal deposit status. However the Faculty Library remains entitled to receive a copy of every legal book, and members of the public can consult these materials via the National Library of Scotland.
