Chepstow's Old Wye Bridge has had many predecessors, mainly wooden and flimsy which did not survive long due to the enormous tidal range experienced here. John Rennie (who had designed Waterloo Bridge) was commissioned to design a better one but his plans were considered too expensive. But following a disastrous collision by a ship it was finally resolved to build a better one. John Rastrick of Bridgnorth modified the plans and created the cast-iron version.

Halfway along it is the border between the counties of Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire and also that of England and Wales.
