Former Corporation Baths, Boston
In 1336 a patent grant of protection was issued for fourteen ships and a number of Germans coming to Boston Fair, and it was in this century that the Hanseatic League secured a steel yard, a fortified warehouse and a dock in Boston.
Near to this yard, in 1832, the Corporation of Boston granted six acres of land, called Dock Marsh, for the use of Boston’s public and private baths (South End Free Baths) for thirty-one years of lease, however, if the lease was not renewed the projectors may sell or demolish the baths. Water for the baths was supplied from a reservoir adjoining The Haven.
By 1878 the baths were dilapidated and out of order and plans were drawn up to construct new baths (Corporation Baths) on the site of the Hanseatic League’s ship building yard. The estimated cost of construction including boiler, engine and fittings was £2,500. The new baths final cost was £3,764. They were opened by Mr James Thorns, Mayor. Admission was: £0/0s/6d. Season tickets were £0/7s/6d. The salt water open-air baths was 80ftx55ft and contained 100,000 gallons of water. It was lined with white glazed bricks and had covered dressing boxes. There was also a covered cold salt water bath for the use of ladies, in the summer, and during the remainder of the year as a tepid bath for all. It was 30ftx20ft and held 15,000 gallons. Mr James Thorns, Mayor laid the memorial stone on Saturday 20th September 1879 and it was opened on Monday 3rd May 1880, also by the mayor.
The former baths appear to have been turned into a private dwelling.
