The late-17thC cross is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. According to Historic Scotland, it is presumed to have been erected by Patrick Lyon, first earl of Strathmore, who inherited Huntly Castle c.1660. Towards the end of the 18th century it was removed to the castle grounds, but re-erected here in 1989. The much weathered lion atop the shaft has seen better days.
