According to a plaque attached the well was founded in 1886 by two supporters of the temperance movement (the Misses Spotteswood) in 1886 to provide alternative non-alcoholic drinks to travellers. The well stopped working in 1970 when Thames Water dug some boreholes and lowered the level of the water table.
