Ruins of Old Tiverton Castle
Ruins of Old Tiverton Castle
Of Norman origin, it was built in 1106 by Richard de Redvers on land given to him by King Henry 1st. It was a Royalist stronghold during the English Civil War (1642-51)and was laid siege to by Fairfax's pariiamentarian troops but were soon able to gain entry and take over the castle. They then proceeded to destroy the defensive parts of the structure to prevent further military use. The building was then converted into a country house
