In the middle of the Firth - just above the yellow buoy in this view - is the remains of the MV Captayannis, a Greek Sugar Carrying Ship. During a storm in January 1974 the Captayannis was blown from her anchorage and collided with the BP Tanker British Light. The anchor chains of the tanker holed the Captayannis causing water to flood in. In an attempt to save the Captayannis her captain beached the ship on a sandbank, where she has stayed ever since. The Captayannis has never been moved due to dispute over her identity and insurers and has slowly disintegrated. She has now become a regular roosting place for the many seabirds in the area.
