Bridge at Stonecouple
Bridge at Stonecouple
This is NT0676 : Bridge over the railway. Just beside this accommodation bridge was a cottage at Stonecouple, between the canal and the railway, Oddly enough, later on in the day I chatted with a couple who were gathering brambles nearby, and the lady told me that she was born in Stonecouple, of which no trace now remains. The cottage is marked on the old six-inch maps, and named on the second series. Interestingly, it is named on the 1856 edition of the 25-inch map as Craigton Lodge.
Accommodation Bridges
When the canals (or railways) were built in the 18th and 19th centuries, they were often routed in such a way that farmers and other landowners had their land bisected, so bridges had to be provided to allow access to fields on both sides of the canal. These bridges are frequently referred to as accommodation bridges, and however solid and well constructed, often don't lead anywhere except from one field to another.
