Whitechapel: The Royal London Hospital
Whitechapel: The Royal London Hospital
Founded in 1740 as the London Infirmary, the institution moved to the present site in 1757 as the London Hospital. Doubtless the local people were very pleased and proud when the frontage was erected, but sadly since then its aspect has undergone progressive 'shabbification', at present partly hidden behind blue hoardings and a row of mostly unused Boris bikes. The 'Royal' in the name was only granted in 1990, on the 250th anniversary.
