Hercules Linton Memorial
Hercules Linton Memorial
Full-scale replica of the figurehead on the clipper 'Cutty Sark', named after the young female witch in Robert Burns' poem 'Tam O'Shanter'. She is depicted a moment after pulling the tail off Tam's gray mare Meg on the Brig o'Doon. The memorial was erected in 1997 in memory of the ship's designer, Hercules Linton, who was born in 'Bervie' in 1837. The house where he was born and died still stands in the town's market square. The ship was built in Dumbarton in 1869 and is now preserved at Greenwich.
