Aberdeen Mercat Cross, Castlegate
Aberdeen Mercat Cross, Castlegate
The cross at Aberdeen was constructed in 1686 by the mason John Montgomery of Old Rayne. The base was altered in 1821. Lord Cockburn wrote in 1841 that it was the "finest thing of its kind in Scotland". It stood originally a little further west and was moved to this location in 1842. The original shaft was replaced in 1995 and is now kept in the Tolbooth Museum.
