Old Forge, Chillington
This uninspiring building stands at the junction of the mainstreet and Tanpit Lane. It was a working forge/blacksmith as far back as the 1500's. It is now a Grade 1 listed building, believe it or not. It is apparently owned by 5 brothers and sisters who have to decide what to do with it. It has permission to be put back into use as a working forge. The other option is to let it fall down.
The 'tanpits' referred to in the name of the lane, used to lie further south of this point. The pits were made in Frogmore Creek where the sea was able to get to. They used to tread the animal skins in the salt water. This was the start of the tanning process.
