Monument to Donald Cargill
Monument to Donald Cargill
Reverend Donald Cargill was one of the ministers who took to the fields and hills to conduct open air services, known as 'Blanket Sermons' during the Covenanting times. The stupid, dithering Stuart kings in London attempted to impose the Episcopacy on the reformed Presbyterian church in Scotland, Cargill, a normally retiring man, was one of the principal opponents of the new bishoprics. One night, 12th. July 1681, while staying at Covington Mill, he was seized by James Irvine and his henchmen. They took Donald, first to Glasgow then later to Edinburgh for trial. The actual trial, on 27th. July the same year, lasted less than ten minutes in which time he was charged, found guilty and condemned to death. He was immediately taken to the blocks where he was beheaded with his head being pinned on a stake at the Netherbow beside the head of his friend, Richard Cameron, founder of the Cameronian Church, one of the foremost free Presbyterian movements in Scotland. This monument at Covington is one of two dedicated to the martyr of the church in Scotland, the other is at Rattray in Perthshire, his place of birth. Irvine was paid 5,000 merks for the arrest and ultimate execution of the good minister.
