Cuckmere Cairn War Memorial
Cuckmere Cairn War Memorial
Erected in 2006 in remembrance of a company of Canadians who lost their life during a German air attack. A local home guard member had warned the commanding officer about how the planes used the river for low flying navigation but was ignored. A few days later the planes arrived and shot up the tents and killed the commanding officer who had ignored the advice whilst he was shaving in one of the coastguard cottages which lie out of shot to the right. The home guard soldier annually laid a wreath on the spot until his death in 2004. Beyond is the Cuckmere estuary with Exceat Farm and Friston Forest visible in the distance.
