Coastguard Cottages, Cuckmere Haven
Coastguard Cottages, Cuckmere Haven
The only buildings at the mouth of the Cuckmere River are these cottages perched on the cliff top on the western side of the estuary. Built in the early 19th century to counter the smuggling activities that went on at this isolated spot. To the left is the old watch house whilst the cottages to the right were the living quarters for those stationed here. These days the buildings are used as holiday homes except for one which is occupied all year round. A helicopter can be seen between the two having just flown low along the coast to Beachy Head before returning.

The normal view of the cottages looking eastward with the Seven Sisters in the background is the most photographed view in Sussex.
