Cuckmere River Mouth
Cuckmere River Mouth
Struggling through the shingle at low tide when it is actually shallow enough to ford on foot though you do need to remove your boots and roll your trousers up to the knees. The mouth of the river has shifted over the centuries and by the end of the 19th century it entered the river on the eastern side next to Cliff End on the far left. In the first decade of the 20th century a line of defences was built on the eastern side to protect Foxhole Farm which moved the mouth back towards the western side where it was straightened through the shingle after the Second World War.
