SJ3099 : The promenade walk at Crosby

The promenade walk at Crosby
The promenade walk at Crosby
The promenade appears to be pointing directly at the Liver Buildings whose twin towers can be made out in a zoomed-in view although just over 10 kilometres away.

Even at this scale this shot demonstrates the curvature of the earth. The Liver Buildings are directly in line with the promenade yet if you check on the OS map it shows that they are some way off that line. That is because the OS map is drawn using a Mercator projection, keeping the lines of longitude parallel. A straight line on the OS is a rhumb line while the line of sight is a great circle. If you were to fly directly to the Liver Buildings keeping them dead ahead in sight, your course would be constantly changing.
