Drainage channel near Pappert Hill
Drainage channel near Pappert Hill
Some of the water of the Pappert Burn comes from NS4280 : Pappert Well, but at least as much of it comes from this drainage channel, which flows into the burn a short distance downstream from the well (see the map).

Large-scale mapping shows this drainage channel originating near here, well within the area of woodland. However, it can be followed further: the channel has its beginnings in a wet area near a NS4280 : Stile east of Pappert Hill; water collects there in a ditch that closely follows the eastern edge of the woods: NS4280 : The edge of Nobleston Wood.

See also NS4280 : Drainage channel near Pappert Hill, which shows the point where the channel enters the woods.

The area shown in the present picture is a typical dead space within a dense coniferous plantation, carpeted with brown needles; the margins of the drainage channel are very wet, with Sphagnum mosses and liverworts. When this picture was taken, the area was within a rain cloud, though not a dense one.
