Streets of Much Wenlock 1-Shropshire
The history of Much Wenlock stretches back to Roman times, beyond AD 680 when Milburga founded a monastery for monks and nuns and in 1224 was granted a weekly market. In 1540 however, Wenlock Priory was dissolved in the general Dissolution which took place at this time, when Henry VIII got the Abbey habit*. Dr William Penny Brookes, the founder of the Wenlock Olympian Games, was born here on 13th August 1809 and the first Games took place in 1850. The Guildhall, which incorporates the Courthouse, is open from April to October and is worth a visit. This view is of Shineton Street - not sure whether it is 'Shin-eton' or 'Shine-ton'. *The Abbey habit refers to a one-time television advertisement for the now-vanished Abbey National building society.
