Clifford's Tower, York
Clifford's Tower, York
The original mound of Clifford's Tower, with a timber structure at the top, was constructed by William the Conqueror in 1068 as a statement of his power over the region.
On 16th March 1190, the timber fortification saw the horrific mass suicide and massacre of York's 150-strong Jewish community. Anti-Semitic rioting had already taken place in London, King's Lynn and Norwich following the death of Henry II, a monarch who had offered much encouragement to Jewish business activity. With his death, this protection ended, and rather than face death at the hands of a murderous mob, Rabbi Yomtob called upon his fellow Jews to commit suicide. The castle pictured here, was constructed to a quatrefoil plan, on top of the Norman motte, between 1245 and 1272, during the reign of Henry III. It isn't entirely clear when or why the Tower got its present name. Originally it was simply known as the King’s Tower, the first recorded use of 'Clifford's Tower' is not until 1596. The name may be a reference to the fact that Roger de Clifford was hanged at the tower in 1322 for opposing Edward II, or to the Clifford family’s claim that they were the hereditary constables of the tower.
