Darby and Joan
Darby and Joan
This is the Darby and Joan Hall, opened in July 1960 although the stone plaque by the door records the start of construction in 1959.

The hall is extensively used for all sorts of clubs, not all of them of the 'Darby and Joan' vintage: judo, keep-fit and dance classes are held weekly.

Darby and Joan, like John Bull, are figures of folklore: an elderly, active, married couple of dependable character. Darby and Joan clubs were very common up until about the time this hall was built, and while many have gone there are still a few dozen scattered around the UK.

A local author has written about the hall: LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link )
