Whitecliff Iron Works
The iron works was a busy industrial site producing cast iron. For centuries the Forest of Dean was one of the main iron making areas of Britain. Fuelled by charcoal before 1750, coke took over and a blast furnace was built at Whitecliff around 1800. It was unprofitable and David Mushet, a leading metallurgist who had supported it, moving from Derbyshire in 1810, withdrew his support the next year, and the works were abandoned in 1816. The site is a scheduled monument owned by the Dean Heritage Museum Trust, and is an important part of the iron making history of the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley, and also nationally. It is intended to stabilise the flue and furnace. LinkExternal link
