The Centre for Environment. Fisheries and Aquaculture Science was originally established in Weymouth in 1969 to investigate salmon disease. Increasing demands, particularly with European legislation, meant that staff sizes and roles grew and by 1991, the old offices at Lookout House were inadequate.

In 1994, this new state-of-the-art building was opened, and it features these columns and a number of 'archaeological' reliefs in the walls - see SY6878 : Fishy fossils.
