The track past here is called Red Lane, and behind me is Redlane Barn. The ploughed field is a clue as to the probable origin of this name.
The normal looking red-brown soil colour is actually not what is usually seen round here. Very pale to white are the local colours on the chalky Downs. As you get further from the scarp, patches of later deposits start to appear as remnant layers on the top of some hills.
I haven't looked at a geology map, but I'd take a guess that this is what's happening here.
The unsurfaced Red Lane would be a significantly different colour from the white tracks all around.
