Rhaslas Pond
Rhaslas Pond
This pond is of historic significance in that it was part of the Dowlais Free Drainage System which was an early 19th century network of ponds and leats that collected moorland water for the Dowlais Ironworks.
It appears that the pond is still providing water for industrial purposes as a surface pipeline from the pond snakes its way across the moor towards the nearby Ffos-y-fran opencast coal mine.
However, the future of the pond is uncertain as there is currently (October 2013) a planning application for the Nant Llesg opencast mine which will include the pond and a large area of surrounding moorland.
