Section of MMS293's hull, 2009
Shown here is the only remaining hull section of the port bow of MMS293. In recent research and from old photographs, I found that in 1984, most of the bow of the minesweeper remained, but by late 1985 the section shown here was all that was left. There were numerous vertical cuts to the starboard hull and the stem post appeared to have been clean cut, which points, in my view, to a possible salvage attempt having been undertaken between 1984 and 1985.

MMS293 had prior been subjected to arson, which had led her owner, the boatyard owner Fred Watts, to abandon her at some point before 1977; a local resident, interviewed by the Nautical Archaeology Society as part of their inaugural fieldwork season in 2006, suggested this had taken place during the 1970s. Fred Watts, as I have now discovered, died in 1979 or 1980, and his son was, in 1982, reportedly in the process of having the vessels left by his father 'cut up or burnt'.

Such an endeavour, if even undertaken at all, evidently proved unsuccessful.

As for MMS293, she has not deteriorated a great deal in the few years since this photograph was taken, nor much in the past twenty years for that matter. This photo was taken as part of my own project's inaugural season of fieldwork, during which we visited and completed partial drawn records of MMS293, in the summer of 2009.
