A slime mould - Arcyria denudata
A slime mould - Arcyria denudata
These stalked sporangia (spore-producing bodies) were on a log beside a NS3977 : Path through the woods. Compare NS3977 : A slime mould - Arcyria denudata, showing the immature sporangia of the same species. The present picture shows the mature structures, which are larger (appearing fluffed up), no longer sticky-looking, and an altogether different colour.

The sporangia look rather spongy in this view. The spores are born on a branching structure called the capillitium, giving the sporangia a loofah-like appearance when seen through a lens. The vivid colour seems to be associated more with the spores than with the framework that holds them; after their spores had been dispersed, the remaining spore-producing bodies looked rather dull.

In fact, though they are not shown in this view, many older capillitia whose spores had already been dispersed, and which had become detached from their stalks, had stuck together, forming a dull brown mass.
