Sika stag and Hind on New Forest footpath
Sika stag and Hind on New Forest footpath
A dark brown Sika Stag (male) and a paler Sika Hind (female) on a New Forest footpath near Hawkshill. We saw two stags parallel walking and then heard them make their distinctive whistle, there were 3 whistles in quick succession and then a long silence. They were making this sound for a long while. We found it very interesting to hear the sounds the deer make during the rut. the Sika have been wild in the New forest since 1904 when two escaped from the Beaulieu estate. They would be so easy to miss, as they stand so still and really blend into the paths and trees and ferns.
