Tolbooth lion, High Street
The lion sculpture above the entrance to the town's tolbooth signifies Tain's status as a royal burgh in former times. Royal burghs were established by royal charter from the 12th century onwards. These charters accorded resident freemen of the burgh (burgesses) specific privileges, chief of which was the right to hold markets and fairs that generated revenue in the form of tolls charged to those entering the burgh and selling goods. Royal burghs alone had a right to engage in foreign trade, the products of which could be sold at market. For more see LinkExternal link
