Openshaw West
Openshaw West
The site for the new Manchester City Academy and training complex viewed from the Ashton Canal towpath.

The site was formerly the Clayton Aniline factory site and was historically home to a gasometer, an alkali works, a forge, a refuse heap, railway sidings and other industrial works, and so was subject to heavy industrial uses until the chemical factory was demolished in the mid 2000s.

As a result of this history, the land was heavily contaminated and required remediation. Despite the bulldozing, there is still a strong smell of aromatics as you walk past the site.
