The building in the far corner is known as Penniless Porch or Beggars Porch. It was built about 1450 by Bishop Thomas Beckington SeeST5545 : The unusual tomb of Bishop Thomas Beckynton who also built Vicars Close ST5545 : Vicars Close, Wells, Somerset, from its Northern end. It is a gateway into the cathedral precinct and is so called because it was a favourite place for beggars to ply their trade.
