Grand Union Canal: Old Linslade Winding Hole
Grand Union Canal: Old Linslade Winding Hole
A winding hole is a deliberately widened reach of the canal that enables long narrowboats to turn through 180 degrees. Usually these are found next to old wharves where working boats might have had a reason to need to turn, but there never was a wharf here and this one is modern, post-dating the main commercial use of the canal, as it is not shown on the 1926 Edition of the large scale Ordnance Survey mapping. It does however appear on the 1974 Edition. This one is slightly unusual as the original route of the canal followed the curve of the towpath to the right, and the winding hole has been created by straightening up the line of the bank on the left. Looking at satellite imagery the canal is a maximum of about 27 metres or about 88 feet wide here. Whether the left side is deep enough to take a boat is a different matter however...

Old maps also show that there used to be an antiquity of a Holy Well here, in the bank that was lost when the canal was widened.
