Lincoln West Common
The West Common has been an important feature of Lincoln’s landscape from the Roman military period 60-90 AD through the medieval period with ridge & furrow earthworks to the 20th century as the racecourse and military use during WW1. The racecourse was moved here in 1773 hosting the first ‘classic’ race of the flat racing season, The Lincoln Handicap, though the racecourse closed in 1964. The football pitches are on the site of the Aircraft Acceptance Park used in WW1 to accept Sopwith Camels and Handley –Page bombers and traces of the hangars can be seen by Alderman’s Walk.
