Nottingham Castle (detail)
Nottingham Castle (detail)
Nottingham Castle is located in a commanding position, "Castle Rock", with 40 m cliffs to the south and west. In the Middle Ages it was a major royal fortress. It was largely demolished in 1649, a ducal mansion later occupying the summit. This was burnt out in 1831, and later became an art gallery and museum.
