The bridge was built by the Ovingham Bridge Company and opened as a toll bridge in 1883. It was released from toll in 1945 and later a footbridge was erected alongside the main bridge.
Ovingham Bridge
Ovingham Bridge was opened in 1883. It operated as a toll bridge until 1944 when it was adopted by Northumberland County Council. It has operated with a 3T weight restriction since 1944. Width restrictors of 6ft 6" were added in the 1970s to enforce this weight limit. It carries about 4000 vehicles/day over the River Tyne.
