Shoppers haven't dropped yet and are heading for TKMaxx, the Bullring or the bus. Three chaps, working on the rebuild of New Street station, take time out to check their phones.

This is a highly deceptive photo. The people are on Queen's Drive, a concrete vehicle access deck from Hill Street at the level of the passenger concourse of the 1960s station. The pick-up, drop-off, taxi rank triangle is behind the camera. The Comfort Inn is on the corner of Station Street and Dudley Street at a much lower level ground level: ground and first floors of some height are out of view: see SP0786 : Station Bar, Birmingham and the view northwest up Dudley Street in SP0786 : Dudley Street, Birmingham, all augmented by Bing Maps Bird's Eye views. The building is discernible at the extreme right-hand edge of SP0686 : Birmingham New Street Station Redevelopment, a view down Station Street. The Comfort Inn was originally the Market Hotel; part of the name can be seen below the balustrade. The hotel was shown on the Ordnance Survey map of 1906, a short walk from the huge Market Hall east of New Street station where the upper level of the Bullring precinct is now.
