SS8846 : Start of the ascent of Porlock Hill

Start of the ascent of Porlock Hill
Start of the ascent of Porlock Hill
Taken from the junction of the High Street (A39) and the B3225, this shot looks on to where the A39 starts to climb out of the village up its 1 in 4 hill (25%). The road off to the right is the scenic toll road. There's no fun in climbing the hill in our modern cars. It was much more uncertain whether we would make it in my 1958 Austin A35 with its 1000cc engine struggling and no lower gears left, and with the primitive cross-ply tyres losing their grip. Ahh, those were the days!
