The Castle is a Scheduled Ancient Monument which was built in 1544. It was part of a series of fortifications constructed by Henry VIII around England's coasts to protect the country from invaders. Barely was the work completed when Henry witnessed his flagship, the Mary Rose, sink in the harbour in front of the Castle. See: LinkExternal link
The Lighthouse on the North Face of Southsea Castle is Grade II listed and was built in 1828. It has English Heritage Building ID: 474386.
