'The Regent'
'The Regent'
Lyme Regis was endowed with a modern cinema thanks to a Mr Donald Hardy. He managed to secure enough funds to buy the old Bow House Hotel on this site and demolished it. Engaging the services of Bristol architect W. H. Watkins the Regent was opened on Monday, October 11th, 1937. The design is relatively simpler than that of contemporaries who featured elaborate Egyptian or pseudo-classical decoration found elsewhere. This refreshing approach still impresses today.

Hardy kept the cinema running despite the war and entertained many troops throughout. In 1973, a Mr. Verncombe acquired the Regent and it later became part of the Scott group of cinemas.
