Although it's not evident from this picture, Chirk Aqueduct is 70-feet (21 m) high. It carries the Llangollen Canal (formerly The Ellesmere Canal) across the Ceiriog Valley for 710-feet (220 m). The border between England and Wales runs underneath it, because of this, the Grade II* listing is in two parts: English Heritage Building ID: 255822 and Cadw Building ID: 618.
The aqueduct which cost 20,898, was designed by Thomas Telford for the Ellesmere Canal and completed in 1801. Water is contained by a cast iron trough within the masonry walls. See also:
